10 Small Business Trademark Mistakes that Cost You Money

Protect Your Stuff

The Buckster Writes: Having a growing business I believe this is something that all fast growing business needs to address particularly if you have a large internet presence.  Now that I am back on track with my business I have been looking at trademarking my business.  Over the last several years I have learned quite a bit about e-commerce and I can see where the trademark is going to be extremely vital to my business.  The author of the article 10 small business Trademark Mistakes really opened my eyes to the importance of Trademarking.  After reading the article I knew that this was a resource that all small businesses needed.  At the end of the write up will be a link to the original article.  The top three mistakes that caught my eye was 1. You registered your trademark but didn’t secure your name in URLs or social media profiles.  I mentioned early that over the last several years I have been growing my e-commerce business.  I did not know that I needed to secure both the Domain names as well as the social media profiles.  As I was reading this section what came to mind is the fact that on sites such as Twitter you will 50 numerous people using a popular celeb name to gain followers.  I also thought about all the websites that use a name very similar to your URL spellings.  Its definitely a course of action that I will be researching to secure everything that I am creating. 2. You never trademarked your business name. I am not going to kid you. I thought when you trademarked the logo the business name was automatically included.  This information is very handy and lets me understand that absolutely everything that I create must be protected.  3. You assumed that your trademark covers your use of your mark for everything and everywhere.  Again I thought once you received the trademark you can use it at your discretion on everything and its protected.  Literally you have to treat everything as individual.  A Intellectual Attorney is definitely someone that I will be finding.  There are several products and services that I have created that must be protected.
